Rainbow Mountain Peru – The Best Day Trips From Cusco
The Rainbow Mountain Tour begins at 4:00 a.m., with pick-up from hotels in Cusco. The journey starts before sunrise, allowing travelers to experience the transition from the quiet city to the open landscapes of the southern valley. Along the route, the scenery reveals traditional Andean villages, agricultural fields, and views of snow-capped peaks that mark the beginning of the highlands.
After approximately three hours on the road, there is a stop in the town of Cusipata for breakfast. This moment serves to rest, adapt to the altitude, and prepare for the hike. From here, the group continues by vehicle to Phulawasipata, the trailhead leading to Rainbow Mountain.
The hike begins through wide valleys surrounded by alpacas, llamas, and herding communities that preserve ancestral customs. The ascent is steady, offering continuous views of the Ausangate Glacier, a sacred mountain for local people and one of the most remarkable sights in the region.
At the top, travelers reach Vinicunca, known worldwide as Rainbow Mountain. The mountain’s surface displays natural layers of red, yellow, green, and ochre, formed by the accumulation of mineral sediments over centuries. Here, visitors can explore the area, take photographs, and learn from the guide about its geological origin and local significance.
The return follows the same trail, revealing new perspectives of the Andean landscape. Upon arrival in Cusipata, lunch is served before beginning the trip back to Cusco.
